ASSISTANCE DOGS NI QUIZ NIGHT

How we train our dogs

Evolution

Our ADNI puppies undertake training from 12 to 18 months. Training commences when the puppies are eight-weeks old. They spend 12-14 months with a puppy foster carer. Disability Assistance Dogs require additional advanced training and their training takes between 16-18 months.

Puppy Training

Our puppies need to have the following essential qualities such as a gentle nature, curiosity and friendliness. We have a tendency to work with Labradors, golden retrievers or crosses of these breeds. We also train Labradoodles for those with dog hair allergies.

Once we have our puppies selected they are placed with specifically selected puppy foster carters. They care for our puppies full-time – under the supervision of our trainers, taking them to puppy classes, and continuing the training at home. Our foster carers teach the pups basic obedience, social skills and the core tasks of touching, tugging and retrieving which are essential before they move on to advanced training.

Advanced Training

When the pups are approximately 14 months old they move into advanced training. The core skills they have already learned are extended to tasks such as opening doors, retrieving the phone, pressing automatic door buttons, loading and unloading the washing machine.

During the next few months we hone their skills and are carefully matched with a person with a physical disability who is on our waiting list. Their training is then fine tuned and tailored to the specific needs of the individual. During this training the dogs will continue obedience training, visiting shops, restaurants, hospitals to ensure that they are confident and well-behaved in all situations. Training is fun and reward based.

Partner Training

For Autism and Disability Assistance Dogs, the applicants are invited to our dog training classes. Under the guidance of our dog trainers, the applicant learns how to work with their dog, learning all the relevant commands. They are taught how to care for the dog. We build in home visits and overnight sleep-overs as part of the transition from foster carer to their home.

Aftercare and Retirement

We offer on-going aftercare and guidance through aftercare visits and telephone support, which allows us to ensure the success of the partnerships and well-being of all our dogs throughout their entire working lives until their well -deserved retirement.
