ASSISTANCE DOGS NI QUIZ NIGHT

The Day we went to the Palace

Evolution

Ready, set and off to the Palace we did go
Dressed in our best, the sun shining on us below
While on the train strange glances we did gain
As I think our dress code was most unusual for the train!

Green Park station was our final stop and then a dander through the park
The Palace stood, underneath bright skies not clouds so dark.
Rather early for this special date we joined the shortest queue
Standing in sweltering heat and longing for a pew.

People watching passed the time, some men wore top hats
While others, we spotted in tails and cravats
For the ladies, hats were the order for the day
Mine was navy and Penny’s maroon and silver grey.

At last the gates opened wide and each of us had to be identified
A friendly nod and off we went with mouths open wide
Once through the gate a quick selfie was our demand
But then a shout ‘no photos in this area’ was the reprimand!

As photos on the forecourt were not allowed
A little sneaky one taken – ‘oops too late’, made us feel so proud
Then off through an arch to the inner quadrangle
Where photos could now be taken from any angle.

Up the red carpeted steps then across the hallway
Guests being directed to the garden lest anyone should go astray
Wow! what a sight to behold acres of garden began to unfold
With a lake in the distance or so we were told.

8,000 guests on the day were fed
The Queen really does put on a lovely spread
Iced coffee, tea, and  sandwiches of cucumber and mint
Yummy chocolate cake and tartlets with a lemon hint

People started to form a line while the band began to play
The National Athem signalling the Queen was on her way.
On the balcony she appeared, her presence brought a smile
As everyone strained to see her in her latest style

Elequantly dressed in a shade of green
Only extra special guests were chosen to be seen.
As the queen wandered in between for a private chat
We watched – I knew she was close by when I saw her hat

To finish off this lovely day we swayed to the sound of the band
Then off for a long dander to survey all the Queen’s land
Trees, flowers  and shrubs were all in magnificent bloom
With sore feet and tired legs the end of the day had come too soon

A beautiful and enjoyable day had gone just too fast
The time had flown quickly past
Home via the tube and train
With special memories from the day that will always remain.
